Pelin Kaya murderer agrees to 37-year prison sentence

Jeremie Camilleri, the man who killed Pelin Kaya in January 2023, indicated his agreement to a 37-year prison sentence

Following months of discussions, the prosecution, the defence and the lawyers of the victim’s family agreed that Camilleri should serve a prison sentence of 37 years.

The prosecution noted the agreement took into account the seriousness of the accusation and the circumstances.

However, the court presided over by Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera made it clear “is not bound to abide by those terms”.

The court’s sentence, which it said may be longer than agreed on between the parties, is expected to be given on 5 March.

Jeremie Camilleri spontaneously but intentionally ran over the Turkish woman when speeding down Testaferrata Street in Gżira on 18 January 2023.

He then threw stones at the lifeless body of the woman who had been walking back home from a friend’s place on her 30th birthday.

The 34-year-old man from Ħal Lija was drunk and under the effects of cocaine.

Pelin Kaya was rushed to hospital but soon died from the grievous injuries suffered.

Last week, Camilleri admitted to the killing, reversing his initial not guilty plea to charges of wilful homicide.
