‘Independent’ media outlets ignore industrial action at Air Malta

Malta’s leading newsrooms have avoided to report on a union directive ordering Air Malta employees to not carry out any work for KM Malta Airlines

The directive by the General Workers’ Union, issued on 14 March, was published on Facebook by PN MP David Agius on Monday evening.

NEWZ.mt was the only media outlet to report on the industrial dispute, following a number of articles on irregularities surrounding the launch of Malta’s “new” airline.

On Saturday afternoon, the Nationalist Party issued an official statement, saying KM Malta Airlines (KMMA) “seems to be starting off on the wrong foot”.

It said the party had spoken to a number of Air Malta workers “who expressed their disappointment at being deceived by the government”.

The workers are claiming that they still have no information about their new contracts, wages and working conditions with KMMA, just 8 days before the new airline’s first flight, the PN said.

KM Malta Airlines is set to take off on 31 March, replacing the current national airline Air Malta.

The Nationalist Party said it was “clear that the Labour Party has not learned and will never learn from its mistakes”.

As of Saturday evening, the PN’s statement was not reported by any of the “independent” media.
