Ian Borg silent on Russian embassy workers stealing flowers and candles

Foreign affairs minister Ian Borg has not reacted to a request for a statement on the removal of items from public space by Russian embassy workers

Following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, civil society organisation Repubblika called for a protest in front of the Russian embassy in San Ġwann on Monday evening.

Shortly after the protest, persons that appeared to be embassy employees did not only remove portraits of Navalny stuck to the gate, but also candles, photos and frames placed on the public sidewalk.

“This is the intolerance shown by Vladimir Putin’s regime”, Repubblika president Robert Aquilina said on Monday night in a reaction on Facebook.

NEWZ.mt asked Ian Borg whether he or his ministry had taken steps to assess the incident and whether the Russian embassy had been contacted.

The minister and occasional UN Security Council chair was also asked whether it was acceptable that foreign powers use their diplomatic privileges to act on Maltese territory as they please.

Neither the minister nor his office have replied to the questions.
