Malta’s ‘new’ airline already affected by industrial action

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has issued a directive ordering Air Malta employees not to carry out any work for KM Malta Airlines

It also reminded its members “in all grades and departments of Air Malta plc” not to sign any contract or termination form.

The industrial action directive “with immediate effect” and “until further notice” was quietly issued on Thursday.

It suggests that Air Malta expects its employees to carry out work related to KM Malta Airlines (KMMA) without an agreement.

The GWU’s directive was made public by PN MP David Agius on Facebook on Monday night.

Delays and apparent illegalities surrounding the launch of the government’s new airline have made headlines in the past months:

In December, KM Malta Airlines failed to provide customers with documents on its terms & conditions for bookings taken over the phone.

KMMA has also failed in being treated as new airline by numerous booking agents, causing further confusion among customers.

In January, Air Malta customers found their KM Malta Airlines bookings in Air Malta’s online portal – an alleged GDPR breach currently investigated by the Data Protection Commissioner.

Both the GWU and Air Malta have been contacted for comment, however the latter usually ignores this newsroom’s enquiries.
