Harbour ferry crossings free of charge from Monday

Harbour ferry crossings will be free of charge for Tallinja Card holders from Monday, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Sunday

Abela said this was a measure to promote alternative modes of transport while keeping money in people’s pockets.

Crossing Grand Harbour or Marsamxett by ferry currently costs €1.50 for a one-way ticket or €2.80 for a return trip.

The measure was one of the last decisions taken by former transport minister Aaron Farrugia before being axed from cabinet.

Ferries operating between Valletta and the Three Cities and from the capital to Sliema currently depart every 30 minutes.

The service continues until midnight in summer, but only until 19:30 in winter.

Last year, 760,385 passengers made use of the service between Valletta and Sliema, and 497,998 between Valletta and the Three Cities.
