Family of man fatally tasered by police seeks compensation

The family of Ronnie Ghiller, a man who died after being tasered during a police standoff, is now seeking compensation for their loss

Ghiller’s relatives have filed a case against the Police Commissioner and the government’s Principal Medical Officer.

They’re alleging negligence, unskillfulness, and a failure to adhere to regulations by the officers and doctors involved.

The incident took place in Żabbar in May 2020, after Ghiller was allegedly throwing items from the roof onto people in the street. When police arrived he allegedly locked himself inside a rooftop room.

The police later claimed he was potentially armed, and that he acted aggressively towards a doctor when he emerged from that room before he leapt towards a window.

Police officers restrained him by using a taser gun and the doctor administered a tranquilliser. Ghiller suffered a heart attack, and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

His widow Jacqueline filed a judicial letter in the First Hall, Civil Court. She said her deceased husband had been tasered more than once.
