Deputy Police Commissioner resigns from FIAU board

Ramon Mercieca quit FIAU, has not returned to work with police force

Deputy Police Commissioner Ramon Mercieca has resigned from the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) board and has not returned to work with the force.

Mercieca has been out on sick leave since a photo of him attending Rosianne Cutajar’s baby gender reveal party emerged last month.

The party took place on 25 March, four days after Mark Camilleri published thousands of WhatsApp messages which revealed Cutajar’s intimate relationship with Yorgen Fenech.

Times of Malta reported an FIAU spokesperson confirmed that Mercieca’s last day on the board, where he had been serving as a representative of the police force, was 27 March.

“When you’re in that position, which bears such great responsibility, it’s not ethical to go to a party like that in the midst of a national controversy,” the Times quoted a senior source.

Newsbook said it held information earlier this month that Mercieca’s office had been emptied, however questions sent to Commissioner Angelo Gafà whether Mercieca had also quit the Police Force have remained unanswered.
