Rosianne Cutajar has announced she will drop her libel case against Mark Camilleri amid discussions about her return to the Labour Party
Cutajar drops libel case against Mark Camilleri amid return to Labour
Without naming the author and journalist, Cutajar said on Facebook it was “not useful and important” to continue legal proceedings she opened three years ago.
The MP had filed a libel case over claims made in Camilleri’s book A Rent Seeker’s Paradise that she had been bribed and corrupted by Yorgen Fenech.
Her retreat from the libel case follows Camilleri’s acquittal over charges that he insulted and threatened her in social media.
“As you know I recently made a request within the party structures regarding my return to the Labour parliamentary group. With respect to this process within the party structures, and due to the fact that the circumstances, and the priorities in my life have totally changed, I feel that it is not useful and important to continue with the legal proceedings that I opened 3 years ago”, Cutajar said.
Now also claiming “respect for the private life of my family including my daughter whom I love”, she said that “the truth” was “that no compensation from the court can do me justice after the insensitive and cruel actions I suffered”.
Mark Camilleri said that Cutajar’s announcement on Friday afternoon represented a “clear admission of guilt”.
“Had Rosianne Cutajar had her way, I would have been punished for telling the truth, silenced, and financially damaged”, Camilleri reacted to the news.
The author and journalist told Cutajar on X that her decision was unacceptable, as he received “reputational damage by Labour Party propaganda, apart from having to travel to Malta for your cases”.
He said that now he had a bill to present to Cutajar and a criminal case so the MP paid for her actions.
