Malta’s national airline fails to explain how much money it spent on the development of a redundant app for mobile devices

Air Malta 2 spends money on mobile app without unique features
On Friday morning, Air Malta’s successor KM Malta Airlines (KMMA) announced the launch of its new app for Android and iOS devices.
The airline said its new mobile application was “designed to enhance the travel experience of its valued customers”.
However, the applications’ limited functionality is no different from the airline’s existing mobile website:
“Through this app customers may search and book flights and manage their active bookings”, KMMA said in a statement.
The airline also boasted about its already existing “secure payment options” which would allow customers to “confidently book their flights knowing their transactions are protected”.
However, the only app-exclusive feature NEWZ.mt could identify is that customers are now able to access their bookings without entering the booking reference and their name every single time, as required on the airline’s inferior website.
“Another app that could have been a website”, a commenter quipped on Facebook, asking “why would I want to download another rather useless app that takes up storage space?”
Neither KM Malta Airlines nor London-based Branchspace, the app’s developer, have replied to this newsroom’s questions on the app’s features and cost.
The cost for development and implementation of such mobile application usually runs into tens of thousands of euros, if not six-figure amounts.
