Teachers’ union temporarily suspends directives after strike

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) will temporarily suspend industrial action after an informal meeting with the government

Both sides agreed on a schedule of meetings, MUT said, after a one-day strike which effectively closed all primary and secondary schools.

In an informal meeting to discuss the sectoral agreement, the union and the education ministry identified priority areas.

Apart from Monday’s strike, the union had also directed educators not to carry out class assessments and to refrain from meeting with parents.

Those directives will be temporarily suspended from Wednesday.

Education Minister Clifton Grima welcomed the union’s decision to suspend industrial action and said he looked forward to see children return back to school.

MUT thanked all educators for their support, and said that industrial action would resume if the discussions failed again.
