‘Metsola betrayed us’ – crowds march for ceasefire in Gaza

Crowds marched in Valletta on Saturday calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and to condemn Roberta Metsola for backing Israel’s ‘defence’

The President of the European Parliament was one of the first leaders to make a solidarity visit to Israel after the Hamas attacks.

Roberta Metsola has since been criticised for giving the impression the EU is indifferent to the human catastrophe in Gaza.

Protesters in Valletta criticised Metsola for “enabling genocide” and said she had blood on her hands.

Metsola has repeatedly clarified that she will continue to advocate for a two-state solution.

A young woman named Rayan said the European Parliament President has “betrayed” the people who once supported her.

She called on Metsola to take back her words and instead ask Israel for peace and to stop killing children.

Palestinian Ambassador Fadi Hanania asked how Metsola could justify Israel’s actions, saying she should have been here with the protesters.

Hanania called on the Maltese government to speak up for Palestine at the UN Security Council and advocate for a ceasefire.

Moviment Graffitti’s Andre Callus said, being Maltese, Roberta Metsola has made him feel ashamed.

“I hope she realises the responsibility she has. Perhaps she went there to take photos, but she has ended up with blood on her hands”, he said.

The protest was organised by members of the Arab community in Malta, and endorsed by Moviment Graffitti and the Palestinian Ambassador.
