Marsa raid: Maltese drug clan’s business mostly uninterrupted
Business of a Maltese drug clan operating in and around Triq il-Ġerrejja in Marsa has continued mostly uninterrupted, a source familiar to the scene told Bonġu.
Police carried out a raid against ‘irregular migration’, accompanied by an anti-drug and organised crime operation in the area on 22 September.
The operation led to the arrest of 49 people who would be deported to their country of origin, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said the morning after.
Maltese drug clan ‘overlooked’?
A source is now questioning how Maltese figures “running drug sales from adjacent buildings” have been long “overlooked by police” and were “not even targeted” during the night of the operation.
The police said that the September raid followed days of investigations and observation on garages from where drugs were allegedly being sold.
“How could they miss the bigger picture when they’re saying they observed that street before the raid”, the source asked, alleging the Maltese drug clan was tipped off or at least excluded from the police operation.
Bonġu can confirm that sales of illegal substances in Triq il-Ġerrejja resumed shortly after public attention was directed to the removal of illegal structures from a well-known Marsa migrant hangout.
The police and the minister have been asked to comment on the allegations.
Earlier on Friday, MaltaToday reported about serious allegations of mismanagement, nepotism, bullying and discrimination within the ranks of the police force.
