October 2023 has become the driest month on the Meteorological Office’s records, following a drier-than-average September
Malta experienced driest October on Met office’s records
Only 0.2mm of rain were measured throughout the month, significantly lower than the monthly norm of 77.6mm.
These dry conditions were accompanied by unseasonably warm temperatures of up to 31.7°C, and a mean temperature of 23.9°C.
The stable, warm weather was the result of a stagnant slack area of high pressure stationed over the Mediterranean, and temperatures continued to rise as winds from over the Sahara blew towards the islands.
Farmers have been struggling due to lack of water, and must also battle insects that persist due to these temperatures.
