Labour President defends ‘abortion bill’ following internal criticism

Labour Party President Ramona Attard has defended Bill 28 as ‘another step in the right direction’

This follows Labour MPs’ anonymous criticism of the bill that was unanimously approved in parliament last Wednesday.

Attard said that some may not have understood the change to the Criminal Code for what it actually is.

The bill caters for immediate intervention if complications are able to put a pregnant woman’s life at immediate risk, she explained.

She said that the government resisted proposals such as introducing a magistrate in the whole process.

The Labour President hit out at the Nationalist Party for having been “insensitive and immature” during the debate.

Attard said she recognised the work pro-choice groups “carry out against all odds”.

The watered-down ‘abortion amendments’ have drawn criticism from pro-abortion lobby groups and within the Labour Party.
