Labour MEP vows fight against infinite scrolling

Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba wants the EU to introduce a ban of addictive features like infinite scrolling in social media

Agius Saliba said his proposal also seeks to increase transparency around the algorithms used by social media apps.

The potential law is being discussed by the European Parliament’s internal market committee, the MEP told Times of Malta.

Should his initiative be approved, the committee will push for the European Commission to initiate the legislative procedure.

“Spending hours watching continually suggested content is one of our biggest issues, especially for children”, he said.

Agius Saliba also pointed out that people have no access to the algorithms that determine the content they are shown based on searches.

The business model of social media platforms which promote sensational and addictive content needs to be controlled, he added.

In the United States, a similar law which limits potentially addictive features was proposed in 2019 and has not yet passed Congress.
