Heritage watchdog now wants Ġgantija permit to be frozen

The Superintendence for Cultural Heritage will ask the Planning Authority to freeze a permit issued for an apartment block next to Ġgantija temples

The controversial permit approved on 9 November drew shock and widespread condemnation of the Planning Board’s decision.

Sources close to the cultural heritage watchdog told Times of Malta that it intended to invoke a Development Planning Act provision to effectively freeze the permit.

Article 80 of the law allows revocation or modification if it is proven that a permit was issued on the basis of incorrect information.

The developers’ claim that their project did not fall within the UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone could constitute such false information.

Heritage Malta concerned

On Sunday, state agency Heritage Malta also expressed “serious concerns” about the permit issued by the PA.

The agency said it had consistently objected to the development and that it “will strongly appeal to the decision”.
