Government debt at €9 billion by end of 2022

The Government’s debt stood at €9,003.4 million by the end of 2022, €739.5 million more than one year earlier

Last year, the National Statistics Office said, a deficit of €981.1 million was registered – equivalent to 5.8% of the gross domestic product.

The €981.1 million deficit was an improvement of €194.7 million over the deficit recorded in 2021, the NSO said.

However, it was the fourth-highest deficit in the European Union, with higher deficits recorded only by Italy, Hungary and Romania.

Adjustments were made to the balance of the consolidated fund, the NSO noted, in order to shift to an accruals-based exercise in line with the established methodology.
