Criticism of cash rebate is ‘attack on Malta’ – Film Commissioner

Film commissioner Johann Grech reacted to criticism of cash rebates in a video tirade posted on Facebook

Grech said that criticism of Malta’s rebate scheme for foreign productions will lead to workers in the industry losing their job.

“Those who are attacking the Maltese cash rebate incentive are attacking the film industry’s stability. This is an attack on our country, to push away foreign investment”, he said.

Addressing workers in the industry, Grech said that who opposes Malta’s cash rebate is opposing “your jobs, your futures”.

The film commission came under fire for committing to pay almost €47 million to the company producing ‘Gladiator 2’.

On Thursday, the Nationalist Party requested the Auditor General to investigate around €137 million that were allocated to foreign productions over the last five years.
