300 people rescued, 36 in distress in Malta’s SAR area

On Monday evening, Alarm Phone said it had been alerted to a small boat in distress in Malta’s SAR area

The NGO said it had been informed the boat carried around 36 people, and that a merchant vessel had been on scene but left again.

It said this was “yet again an example of non-assistance” of Malta’s Rescue Coordination Centre.

Update 2 May 14:00 | Doctor Without Borders said on Tuesday morning that the 36 people on a fiberglass boat in distress had been rescued by its team.

300 rescued earlier on Monday

Just after 11pm, NGO Doctors Without Borders reported its team had rescued around 300 people from an overcrowded wooden boat in distress in Malta’s SAR region.
