Abela pledges heavy subsidies on energy prices will be continued

Prime Minister Robert Abela said his government will continue cushioning the impact of high energy prices on Malta’s economy

Abela was speaking at the opening of a new €25 million hotel in St Julian’s, accompanied by his wife Lydia Abela and Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo.

The government’s heavy subsidies on energy have been repeatedly criticised by the green party ADPD.

Spending €1.5 million on subsidies every day was not sustainable, the party said in January, adding that the government should instead use public funds for investing in renewable energy.

While subsidising basic energy and water consumption for households was commendable, blanket across-the-board subsidies did not make sense, ADPD said in April.
