PA approves rezoning: Żurrieq farmland can be developed

More than 11,000sqm of farmland in the Nigret area in Żurrieq have been approved for development amid objections by the public

The executive council of the Planning Authority unanimously approved the rezoning as a residential area, referring to the South Malta Local Plan 2006.

Grand Property Holdings Ltd, with its directors James Barbara and Jason Mifsud, presented the application. The architect is former Nationalist planning minister George Pullicino.

17 years ago, the land in question was already added to the development zone when the building boundaries were extended.

The South Malta Local Plan 2006 designated the site as residential area with a building height of three floors plus a semi-basement.

A group of Żurrieq residents is set to appeal the approval in court, announcing they will be raising funds to appeal the decision.

On Tuesday morning, protest placards were found on the Żurrieq district offices of ministers Miriam Dalli and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.
