Corinne Vella: Hitmen’s claims an attempt to derail murder proceedings

Corinne Vella, the sister of Daphne Caruana Galizia, has slammed a statement by the Degiorgio brothers as an attempt to derail pending murder proceedings

On Saturday morning, Alfred and George Degiorgio issued a statement including new unsubstantiated claims about police inaction in the HSBC heist, Caruana Galizia’s murder and other serious crimes.

The convicted hitmen said they believe that there was a concerted effort to cover up for the “real criminals who commissioned these crimes”.

Secret service agents had been following and reporting on Caruana Galizia’s movements, the Degiorgios claimed.

The brothers have announced their intention to implicate political figures, senior police officers, and the Malta Security Services in the journalist’s murder.

Sister: ‘Attempt to derail murder proceedings’

Corinne Vella said in a reaction that “George Degiorgio is a convicted murderer who admitted in an interview with Reuters that, to him, murdering Daphne was ‘business as usual’ “.

“Rather than face a jury trial and lifetime imprisonment, George and Alfred Degiorgio admitted to killing Daphne and have been sentenced to 40 years in prison”, she reminded.

“The Degiorgios’ and another murderer’s convictions for Daphne’s contract killing are thanks to a small group of people working – at great risk to themselves – to bring all of Daphne’s murderers to justice. The attempt by two of Daphne’s murderers to derail pending murder proceedings should be seen in this perspective”, Vella said.
