Police at collapse site: ‘Don’t share photos on social media’

Bonġu editor Michael Kaden was approached by a police officer, and was told not to share photos of the Kordin collapse site on social media

Kaden said he simply answered “I’m a journalist, of course I’ll do” before leaving the site as he had completed his Wednesday afternoon recordings moments earlier.

A request to the Malta Police Force for an explanation, as to why police officers approach civilians in this way, has remained unanswered.

Earlier on Wednesday, Chamber of Architects president Andre Pizzuto told the media that the demolition of the site where Jean Paul Sofia was killed is “not normal compared to previous cases”.

Author Wayne Flask had flagged the demolition on Facebook when he published new photos in a Facebook posting on Wednesday morning.

It remains unclear when the building collapse site was altered, and if this happened in accordance with the authorities involved.

Looking at archive imagery of a PN media conference held on 2 March, it appears the site had already been demolished at that time.

The competent authorities are yet to reply to several newsrooms’ requests for explanation on the current state of the site.
