Air Malta’s operational problems caused by a grounded aircraft persist

KM514 arrives in Vienna 16.5 hours late, passengers entitled to €250
The national airline’s flight KM514 (AMC514) has arrived in Vienna with a delay of 16.5 hours amid operational troubles caused by a grounded aircraft.
Air Malta’s departure for Vienna on Wednesday was scheduled for 07:10 in the morning, however the flight actually departed moments before midnight.
The morning flight KM514 of Wednesday 12 April only arrived at Vienna International Airport on Thursday after 02:00.
Due to this huge delay, each passenger is entitled to at least €250 in compensation according to the EU’s Flight Compensation Regulation EC 261/2004.
Such monetary compensation can be requested directly from the airline through its customer service.
With a capacity of around 170 passengers per aircraft, Air Malta might be required to pay up to €85,000 in compensations for its Malta-Vienna-Malta flights.
The compensation amount might be even higher in case Air Malta did not provide care for passengers during their 16-hour wait for departure.
Last weekend, angry passengers took to Facebook that they had only received one lousy €6 voucher each for food and drink during their wait at Malta International Airport.
Air Malta has ignored this newsroom’s repeated request for a comment on the airline’s voucher policy.
Significant delays
Significant delays at Air Malta since Sunday were due to a technical issue in an aircraft which had to be withdrawn from service.
The airline said flights to Zurich on Sunday, to Rome and Brussels on Monday and to London Gatwick on Tuesday had been affected.
Air Malta is understood to have had a delay in the delivery of new aircraft while one of two currently leased aircraft is now undergoing maintenance.
