Cassola requests investigation into illegal backfilling of Lunzjata quarry

Independent politician Arnold Cassola has requested an investigation into the case of the illegal backfilling of a quarry at Lunzjata in Rabat

Farmers living nearby told Times of Malta they’re fearing potential danger of a landslide since the quarry has now risen multiple storeys.

The ever-growing pile of rubble has been subject to several enforcement notices and stop-work orders – allegedly ignored by the owner.

“Despite numerous complaints made to the Environmental Resources Authority (ERA), the Planning Authority (PA), the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), and the police, no action was taken action to address this illegal activity”, Arnold Cassola said.

The independent politician has requested the Ombudsman and the Environment and Planning Commissioner to investigate why the authorities failed to act on multiple reports.

Cassola also called on them to take immediate action “to ensure and safeguard people’s safety and wellbeing, and that of the wider environment”.
